Meet Julia
We sat down with our newest team member, Julia Walton, to get to know her better. Read the interview below.
What attracted you to the profession of Landscape Architecture?
I was attracted to the profession because it allows me to design something tangible that broadly benefits others. Landscape architects possess a unique and valuable skillset to shape a worthwhile built environment. Whether contributing to economic and social vitality, increasing environmental resilience, or promoting mental well-being, each project offers an opportunity to improve lives through a connection to nature. I'm grateful that my work enables me to shape spaces that enrich the lives of present and future generations.
What’s your favorite plant material?
Plants that find a spot on my long list of favorites usually have two things in common: they produce great color and are native (or noninvasive) to the area. This category of plant material is the obvious choice if you're looking for something low-maintenance, beautiful, and beneficial. Some vibrant plants that fit this criteria include:
Spring interest - Dodecatheon meadia (Shooting Star)
Summer interest - Amsonia ‘Blue Ice’ (Blue Star)
Winter interest - Ilex verticillata ‘Red Sprite’ (Winterberry)
Fall interest - Hamamelis Virginiana (American Witch Hazel)
What is your favorite open space to visit?
That would have to be Emerald Mountain in Steamboat, Colorado. The mountain features 25 multiuse trails with views of the surrounding valley and mountain range. I grew up hiking it with my family and it's where I first remember experiencing the joy and restorative qualities of nature. When I visit today it reminds me of how important connecting people to nature is in our constantly changing world.
What is a must-have feature for a backyard entertaining space?
Versatility. I think creating a dynamic space that can be used to suit a variety of occasions and preferences is what will make it most enjoyable. To me, shade and shelter are a no-brainer if you want to create a comfortable atmosphere. Options like pergolas or umbrellas coupled with ample seating encourage socialization and relaxation. Lighting is also an aspect that can really elevate the quality of an entertaining space and add ambiance in the evenings.
