NYCHA Armstrong and Marcy-Greene Campus Revitalization

Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

The Marcy-Greene and Armstrong NYC Housing Authority campuses occupy several entire residential blocks in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The campus buildings are set back from the sidewalk with residual fenced-off yards, preserving privacy for residents occupying ground floor apartments.

To increase curb appeal, the linear street-side gardens are planted with repeating drifts of sun-loving roses and ornamental grasses with junipers on the south side of the block. A shade-tolerant plant palette on the north side includes hydrangeas, astilbe, variegated euonymus, and lily turf. The open interior courtyard at the center of the campus includes a refurbished playground with synthetic turf, a shaded gathering area with benches, and new sinuous concrete walking paths with trash bins and tree pit guards throughout.

Working with Arker Companies, a NYC developer, Bayview led the extensive landscape rehabilitation at six NYC Housing Authority campuses, including this one. These projects utilized new funding via the PACT-RAD programs to address structural and environmental deficiencies resulting from long-term disinvestment in affordable housing. The six scattered-site campuses are comprised of post-war apartment buildings with open outdoor spaces. These courtyards and walkways called for new strategies to make them more accessible, safe, sustainable, and beautiful.
