Wild Geranium: A Springtime Favorite

One of our favorite spring natives at Bayview is Geranium maculatum, commonly known as Wild Geranium. This charming perennial adds a soft, textural layer to shaded gardens with its deeply lobed green leaves and delicate purple blooms that appear from April through May. It’s a quiet standout that brings natural elegance to woodland and shade garden designs.

A New York native, Wild Geranium is incredibly reliable in part-shade to full-shade conditions, thriving under tree canopies or along woodland edges. It spreads gently via rhizomes, making it a great choice for naturalized plantings or spaces where you want greenery to gradually fill in over time.

Even better? It’s pollinator-friendly, providing early-season nectar for native bees when few other flowers are in bloom.

Looking to refresh your shade garden or boost biodiversity in a low-maintenance way? Wild Geranium is a dependable pick that balances beauty, function, and ecological value—exactly the kind of spring bloomer we love.
